What You Will Need
  • Blank Greeting Card: size of your choice
  • Watercolor paper or Card Stock
  • Watercolor/Gouache Paint
  • Your favorite rubber stamps
  • Ink Pad
  • Paper-cutter or Scissors
  • Paint Brush & Water
  • Your favorite glue for paper (I used stick glue)
  • Micron Pen or similar
First, you want to have a blank greeting card. The size is completely up to you. In this case I used 4.75in x 4.75in Square Cards that I purchased at Hobby Lobby. These cards just happened to be glossy, so for what I wanted to do I needed paper that would work well with watercolor type paint. I just used some bristol board I had on hand, which is just type of thick art paper that can be used with inks, charcoals etc.  But you can use actual watercolor paper if you wish.

Next, you will cut the watercolor paper so that it is just a little bit smaller than the actual card. This will leave a small white border around or watercolor paper once it is finished.

Here's the fun part! Pick out one (or more if you wish!) color of watercolor or gouache paint that you are going to use for your background. To achieve the different levels of color, use more or less water. The more watered down your paint, the lighter the color will be on the paper. Make sure to cover the whole piece, blending your shades together.

Now you will obviously want to let this piece dry completely before you continue on. Depending on the type of paper you used for this part, you'll find that most types will start to curl up due to being wet. So to fix this, when the paper is completely dry and not before, place a heavy book or other flat item on top of your watercolor paper for a few mins to flatten it out. Or you can slightly bend the paper with your hands in the opposite direction. You definitely want to wait until its dry before doing this, as you don't want to get paint all over what ever you use to flatten it, or for it to stick to it!

Once its completely dry and you have reshaped it, we are ready to move on! Take your favorite paper crafting glue, or in my case my children's glue stick, and attach your watercolor background to your card.

You are now going to cut out another piece of card stock or thicker paper of your choice.  How big or how small you make this piece will determine how much of your watercolor background will show, as well as how much space you have to stamp on. Hold it up to your background to get an idea of what it will look like.

With your favorite stamps and ink pad, stamp the blank piece you just cut. For mine, I used my Heart Lock and Key stamps and ColorBox Pigment pad.  Let the stamped parts dry or use some embossing powder and a heat tool to get another cool look!

Once its dry, take your Micron Pen or similar and add your finishing touches. I added just a bit of black to my heart and key, to give it a slight 3D effect. I then added the string to the key and the lines on the corners. You can add a phrase or saying with your pens, or you can leave it as is.  Using your glue again, attach this piece to the watercolor background, making sure it is centered. Let dry.

And your finished! You now have a cute hand-made card to brighten someone's day!

New Venture Reveal!

1/13/2015

You may remember that last time I revealed a SNEAK PEEK of what new project I was starting.... Well are you ready to see the result?!

Hand-Carved Stamps!!!
Picture
Ok, I'll be completely honest, these (above) were not the result of my first attempt, even if my unreal expectations were that the first one I did would be completely perfect. What can I say, I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my hobbies! The Yarn Star was my 2nd carving attempt and the Heart was my 3rd. The flower design followed, which needs a little work as I ended up cutting off parts of the design that I hadn't meant to.  So I plan on re-doing that one in the near future.  And the Crochet Skull was my 5th carving attempt. It is the redo of my very first hand-carving stamp attempt which you can see below.  Not the greatest but it was a start!
Picture
All of the stamps that I carved were all from my own original sketches and drawings.  Some of them just hanging out in my sketchbook, waiting for their purpose!  I have quite a few tattoo and henna inspired drawings that I have from my current and former professions that I plan on turning into rubber stamps.  So look for those in the future!  Here is the last stamp that I completed yesterday.  A little tougher working with words, but you gotta start somewhere!
Tattoo inspired.

So what inspired me to try my hands at rubber stamps?  First and foremost I have what other fellow crafters call Hobby A.D.D or in simpler terms, I just can't stick with one hobby!!!  I like to dabble in lots of different mediums and I'm sure that will never change!  My mom and I used to do Stampin' Up when I was younger and she even had her own home-based stamp store, but I never really knew you could carve your own stamps!!!  I just knew this was going to be something that I HAVE to try!
But the real reason I picked this new medium is due to the awesome lady behind Hoffee And A Nuffin!!! The minute I found her Facebook page I was in awe.  She beautifully carves stamps of her own design and they are AMAZING!  She also offers wonderful tutorials for creating with stamps on her Blog.  Oh and her hand-made Sock Monkeys are ADORABLE! I definitely recommend checking out her pages!
I hope you enjoyed my new creations!  I hope to share more with you in the future!

A New Year... Let's Get Motivated!

1/5/2015

How is Everyone?! I cannot believe that 2014 is over and we are starting a NEW YEAR! Do you set goals at the beginning of every new year? I know i've always been the type that "thinks" about what things need to be changed or goals that need to be set, but rarely actually move toward that goal. Well this year i'm hoping to be more motivated in keeping the goals or things I have in mind for this year. One of those goals is to Craft and Create more!
Since stepping down from my 6 years of Professional Tattooing to become a Stay-At-Home Mom 4 years ago, I have really struggled to be motivated. I've never been (and sadly never will be) the "good" Housewife type, that enjoys cooking, cleaning or any of the normal tasks Housewives are usually in charge of.  And often find myself spending more time watching t.v. with my 4 year old or scanning the internet and facebook, than anything else during my days.  Please tell me I'm not the only one!?  In my time spent scouring the internet I often see things I want to make, or crafts I want to try.  I envy those who accomplish so much on a day to day basis.  Well this year I am hoping to change that if even a little bit!  I want to feel like I have not wasted my entire day doing nothing!
On top of all of that, I really want to do more with my blog.  I love seeing other crafter's blogs prosper.  Filled with all sorts of fun crafty stuff they are doing with their days.  So I thought today I would share with you a sneak peek of one of those "crafty things I just have to try" as a teaser.  And hopefully if it all goes well (I HOPE!), then I will share this little fun venture with you all very soon! Can you guess what it might be???
